Two arrested in Toronto human trafficking case dating back to 2013, involving coercion, control, and exploitation.
Toronto police have arrested two individuals as part of an ongoing investigation into human trafficking allegations that date back to 2013. The arrests were made following a thorough investigation initiated by the Toronto Police Service last August. According to a news release issued on Saturday, investigators uncovered that a female victim had been trafficked through methods of deception, coercion, and control.
The investigation revealed that the victim was manipulated into surrendering a large portion of her earnings to a suspect. The exploitation involved the creation and management of online advertisements featuring sexualized photographs of the victim, alongside the administration of illicit drugs to maintain control over her.
Authorities identified that the trafficking activities were conducted from an apartment located in the Victoria Park Avenue and Danforth Avenue area. This location was allegedly used by the suspects for the purposes of human trafficking.
On Wednesday, Toronto police arrested Munawar Rajput, 51, and Nubia Letourneau, 56, in connection with the investigation. Rajput faces nine charges, including procuring or exercising control of a person for prostitution, advertising sexual services, trafficking in persons, and forcible confinement. Letourneau faces 18 charges, which include procuring illicit sexual intercourse, exercising control of a person for prostitution, trafficking, administering a noxious substance, forcible confinement, and sexual assault.
Both suspects appeared in court on June 6 at 10 a.m. Investigators have expressed concerns that there may be more victims and have released images of the accused to aid in identifying any additional individuals who may have been affected by their actions.
The Toronto Police Service is urging anyone with relevant information or who may have been a victim to come forward. They can contact the police at 416-808-7474 or provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
Human trafficking remains a serious issue, often involving manipulation and control over vulnerable individuals. This case highlights the importance of vigilance and the role of law enforcement in uncovering and addressing such crimes. The police have underscored their commitment to protecting victims and bringing perpetrators to justice.
The ongoing investigation demonstrates the dedication of the Toronto Police Service to combatting human trafficking and supporting victims through a combination of thorough investigative work and community cooperation. As this case progresses, authorities hope to identify and assist any additional victims who have suffered at the hands of these suspects.
