Toronto Sees Significant Rise in Gun Violence, Launches New Task Force
Toronto, June 27, 2024 – Toronto has witnessed a startling 74 percent increase in gunfire incidents compared to this time last year, Toronto police reported today. This surge has prompted the police to intensify their efforts to tackle gun crime across the city.
Deputy Chief Rob Johnson addressed the media at a news conference, emphasizing that reducing gun violence is a top priority for the police force. Despite the increase in shootings, the number of gun-related deaths remains at 24 for the year, consistent with the same period in 2022. Johnson pointed out that last year’s figures were unusually low, making this year’s increase particularly concerning.
According to police data, most crime guns—between 85 and 90 percent—are being trafficked from the United States, with significant numbers coming from states like Ohio, Florida, Texas, and Michigan. Toronto police are working closely with law enforcement agencies on both sides of the border to intercept these illegal firearms.
Additionally, the police have identified an increase in violence related to the tow truck industry. Since January 1, there have been 24 shootings or firearm discharges connected to this sector, accounting for 12 percent of all gun incidents in the city. In response, the Toronto Police Service has established a Tow Truck Task Force to proactively address these crimes and share intelligence with other services in the Greater Toronto Area.
The involvement of younger individuals in gun crimes is also a growing concern. Recent investigations have revealed that suspects as young as 14 years old are participating in shootings. Johnson highlighted the importance of community and inter-agency cooperation to address the factors driving young people toward such violent behavior.
While acknowledging the rise in gun violence, Johnson reassured the public that Toronto remains a relatively safe city. He stressed the need to understand the changing dynamics behind these incidents and to continue working towards reducing gun crime.
