Brampton Mother Dragged by Car in Facebook Marketplace Scam

Toronto, July 10, 2024 – A Brampton mother, Vashtie Doorga, sustained severe injuries after being dragged by a car while attempting to sell a pair of Air Jordans through Facebook Marketplace. The incident occurred on June 26, near Dixie and Father Tobin roads, when men posing as buyers stole the high-end sneakers and fled.

A Business Venture Turns Tragic

Doorga’s 12-year-old son had recently started a shoe resale business to support his single mother. To help him, Doorga lined up outside a Nike store and purchased the last available pair of “Military Blue” Air Jordans. They arranged to meet a potential buyer who seemed genuine and eager to purchase the shoes.

Upon meeting, four men arrived in a black Tesla. While examining the shoes, one man abruptly yelled, “Go, go, go!” and the car sped off, dragging Doorga for approximately 12 meters. She suffered extensive injuries, including internal chest injuries, road burns, crushed toes, deep tissue damage, a concussion, and a deep forehead cut.

Police Investigation Underway

Peel Regional Police are investigating the incident. The driver is described as wearing a grey and black Nike tech fleece sweater, black pants with “Toronto” written on them, and black foam runners. Other suspects’ details remain undisclosed.

Doorga shared screenshots of the interactions with the suspects before they blocked her on Facebook Marketplace. Despite her injuries, she hopes her story will prevent others from experiencing similar scams.

Impact on the Community

The incident highlights the growing issue of Marketplace scams in the Greater Toronto Area, where over 500 complaints have been reported this year, with losses exceeding $800,000. Toronto police have issued public warnings and Facebook has outlined safety measures to help users recognize scams.

In a heartwarming gesture, a community group gifted Doorga’s son a new pair of Air Jordans for his 13th birthday, providing some comfort during this difficult time.
