Nepal Prioritizes Strong Ties with India for Economic Growth: CPN-UML

Kathmandu, July 11, 2024 – The Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) emphasized that Nepal’s economic prosperity is intertwined with maintaining close and friendly relations with India. Dr. Rajan Bhattarai, Foreign Affairs Department chief and Standing Committee member of the CPN-UML, conveyed this stance in an interview with PTI, underscoring the importance of a collaborative relationship with the southern neighbor.

Dr. Bhattarai’s comments precede a critical confidence vote in Parliament, which could see former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli reclaim his position. Oli, known for his pro-China stance, faces the challenge of balancing relationships with both neighboring giants, India and China, if he returns to power.

Friendly Relations as a Catalyst for Growth

“We believe that we can attract more foreign investment, promote trade, and attain economic prosperity only by maintaining close friendly relations with India,” Bhattarai said. He added that the CPN-UML does not support any anti-India activities from Nepalese soil, viewing India as a crucial partner in the region.

This sentiment is especially significant given past tensions, such as the 2020 publication of a new political map by Nepal that included Indian territories, leading to strained bilateral relations.

Challenges and Dialogue

Dr. Bhattarai acknowledged existing issues, including provisions of the 1950 treaty, border disputes, land inundation in border areas, and the growing trade deficit. However, he expressed confidence that these problems could be resolved through dialogue and mutual cooperation.

Political Stability for Economic Progress

Highlighting the need for political stability, Dr. Bhattarai pointed out that economic prosperity and development are unattainable without a stable government. The CPN-UML recently withdrew support from Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda,” aiming to form a new coalition with the Nepali Congress to ensure political stability and good governance.

With a combined strength of 167 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives, the new coalition surpasses the required majority of 138 seats, setting the stage for significant political shifts.

Future Prospects

The CPN-UML and Nepali Congress have agreed to amend the current electoral system through constitutional changes, aiming for a more stable and inclusive governance framework. Despite these proposed changes, Dr. Bhattarai assured that the inclusiveness, republic system, federalism, and secularism of Nepal will remain intact.

As Nepal navigates these political and diplomatic challenges, the emphasis on fostering strong ties with India reflects a strategic approach to securing the nation’s economic and developmental goals.
