Seniors Struggle with Sky-High Rents and Limited Options

Nanaimo, B.C. (CBC News) – Ron Sept, 70, faces a grim reality: 95% of his pension goes to rent, leaving him with just $100 for other expenses. Sept, like many Canadian seniors, grapples with surging rents and limited housing options on a fixed income.

With 21.5% of Canadian seniors renting and 38.8% spending over 30% of their income on shelter, the housing crisis is particularly severe for older adults. Less than 1% of rentals are affordable and vacant, exacerbating the struggle for many like Shoshona Magill, 74, who fears homelessness if she loses her part-time job.

Aging Canadians face not only financial hardships but also potential loss of community and stability, highlighting the urgent need for affordable housing solutions.
