Hamas Military Wing Chief Mohammed Deif Killed in July Strike, Israel Confirms
The Israeli military has confirmed that Mohammed Deif, the head of Hamas’ military wing, was killed in an airstrike in Gaza on July 13. The strike targeted a compound in Mawasi, near Khan Younis, resulting in the deaths of over 90 individuals and injuring 300 others.
At the time of the strike, the death of Deif had not been confirmed, but recent intelligence assessments have verified his death. Deif was a key figure in Hamas, serving as the leader of the Qassam Brigades, which orchestrated the October 7, 2023, raids into southern Israel. This attack resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 250 hostages taken.
The confirmation of Deif’s death comes a day after the assassination of another senior Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Iran. This event has intensified the conflict, with Hamas accusing Israel of escalation and Iran vowing revenge. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described the assassination as a severe provocation, promising retribution against Israel.
Deif, who was reportedly the second-highest leader in Hamas after Yahya Sinwar, was considered the mastermind behind the October 7 attack. His death marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
