Putin Receives Warm Welcome Mongolia Amid ICC Warrant Controversy

Ulaanbaatar, September 3, 2024 — Russian President Vladimir Putin was welcomed with red-carpet honours during his visit to Mongolia, despite facing an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant. This marks his first visit to an ICC member nation since the warrant was issued in March 2023, accusing him of involvement in the abduction of Ukrainian children.

Putin’s visit comes amid international tensions, as Mongolia, an ICC member, is caught between its legal obligations and its significant economic ties with Russia. During his stay, Putin attended a ceremony commemorating the 85th anniversary of the Soviet-Mongolian victory over Japan in 1939 and signed agreements on energy cooperation with Mongolian officials.

Meanwhile, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine saw one of its deadliest strikes, with Russian forces attacking a military facility and hospital in Poltava, killing at least 41 people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, highlighting the ongoing devastation.

The European Union has expressed concern over Mongolia’s stance on the ICC warrant, with calls for Putin’s arrest from various international figures.
