Upcoming Federal Byelections Set to Challenge NDP Leadership
As two federal byelections approach in Winnipeg and Montreal, the outcomes are expected to significantly test the leadership of NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh. The NDP is facing the dual challenge of defending a longtime stronghold in Winnipeg and attempting to seize a Liberal seat in Montreal.
In Winnipeg’s Elmwood-Transcona, historically an NDP bastion, the absence of a Blaikie—one of the prominent political families—on the ballot could make the race tighter. Former MP Daniel Blaikie stepped down earlier this year, leaving the party to defend the riding without an incumbent. The Conservative candidate, Colin Reynolds, has intensified his campaign by tying Singh to the waning popularity of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, labeling Singh as a “sellout” due to the now-ended confidence-and-supply agreement between the NDP and the Liberals.
Meanwhile, in Montreal’s LaSalle–Émard–Verdun, the NDP is vying to unseat the Liberal candidate in what is expected to be a closely watched three-way race. NDP candidate Craig Sauvé, who has local recognition, has been campaigning alongside Singh to capitalize on dissatisfaction with the Liberals.
These races come at a critical juncture for the NDP, especially as the party moves on from its confidence deal with the governing Liberals. The results of these byelections could play a crucial role in shaping the party’s direction and Singh’s leadership ahead of the next federal election. Voters are set to cast their ballots on September 16, 2024.
