In a significant diplomatic meeting, India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss India’s ongoing efforts to facilitate peace in the Ukraine conflict. The meeting took place during a BRICS national security advisors’ summit from September 10-12, 2024, held at the Konstantinovsky Palace.
Doval, representing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, briefed Putin on Modi’s recent visit to Ukraine, where the Indian Prime Minister met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the ongoing war. Doval emphasized Modi’s commitment to diplomacy, echoing the PM’s message that “the road to resolution can only be found through dialogue and diplomacy.”
In response, Putin expressed his appreciation for India’s role and proposed a bilateral meeting with Modi on October 22, 2024, during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, to review and progress agreements made during Modi’s Moscow visit earlier in July.
Putin also mentioned the potential for India, China, and Brazil to mediate future peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, based on preliminary agreements discussed in Istanbul earlier in the conflict.
This diplomatic engagement underscores India’s active role in seeking a peaceful resolution to one of the most pressing geopolitical crises.
