Montreal Dockworkers Begin 3-Day Strike at Two Terminals

Montreal, Canada — Dockworkers at the Port of Montreal have launched a three-day strike at two key container terminals, Viau and Maisonneuve Termont, starting Monday at 7 a.m. The strike involves around 350 workers represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees, following the expiration of their contract with the Maritime Employers Association in December 2023.

The work stoppage is set to last until Thursday morning, affecting the port’s operations. Despite mediation efforts and an emergency meeting with the Canada Industrial Relations Board over the weekend, negotiations between the union and the employers failed to reach a resolution.

The Maritime Employers Association expressed disappointment, stating they had exhausted all possible avenues to avoid the strike. This action is expected to disrupt cargo movement, adding pressure to ongoing labor disputes in the region.

Union officials have highlighted that their members are striking to secure better working conditions and wages, as the current agreement expired nearly a year ago. Both sides remain far apart on key issues as the strike continues.
