Modi Government Approves Chennai Metro Phase-II: A Strategic Move to Ease Tensions with DMK?
Chennai, October 5, 2024 – In a landmark decision, the Modi government has approved the much-anticipated Chennai Metro Rail Phase-II, clearing the way for a Rs 7,425 crore contribution from the Centre in the joint project, which totals Rs 63,246 crore. This approval follows a meeting between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27.
The move has been welcomed by the DMK-led state government, with CM Stalin expressing gratitude towards the Prime Minister. However, political experts see this as more than just an economic boost. The decision is being viewed as a strategic move by the BJP to ease tensions with the DMK, a key player in the INDIA alliance, while also sending a message to increasingly demanding NDA allies, like the TDP and JD(U).
The Centre’s prior delay in funding had caused friction between the BJP and DMK, with accusations of political bias. Now, this approval is being hailed as a potential truce, signaling cooperation ahead of critical national elections.
