Supreme Court Upholds Summons Against Arvind Kejriwal Over Remarks on PM Modi’s Degree
New Delhi | October 21, 2024: The Supreme Court has dismissed a plea filed by former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, challenging the Gujarat High Court’s decision to uphold a summons against him. The case pertains to Kejriwal’s alleged defamatory remarks concerning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational qualifications.
A bench comprising Justices Hrishikesh Roy and S.V.N. Bhatti rejected Kejriwal’s request to quash the defamation case, citing a previous ruling by the apex court that had dismissed a similar plea filed by AAP leader Sanjay Singh. The Gujarat High Court had earlier refused to provide relief to both Kejriwal and Singh in February 2024.
The defamation case was initiated after Kejriwal, during a public address, questioned the authenticity of PM Modi’s educational degree, leading to allegations of defamation by BJP supporters.
This legal setback adds to Kejriwal’s ongoing challenges as his party continues to face scrutiny over various statements made against the central leadership.
