Hindu Temple in Brampton Suspends Priest Amidst Violent Protests

Brampton, Canada – November 7, 2024

A Hindu priest in Brampton has been suspended for allegedly spreading “violent rhetoric” following clashes between protesters and temple attendees. The incident took place at the Hindu Sabha temple on November 3, during a protest led by a group supporting Khalistan. Tensions flared when demonstrators disrupted an event co-hosted by the Indian Consulate, leading to physical altercations captured on video.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown condemned the violence, urging both Sikh and Hindu communities to maintain peace. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also denounced the incident, reaffirming citizens’ rights to practice their faith safely.

India, concerned about the security of its nationals in Canada, called for swift legal action against those responsible for the violence. Relations between India and Canada remain tense, particularly following accusations last year involving the killing of a Khalistan activist.
