Chinese national Michael Xu has been stuck in Toronto for three weeks, unable to return to his job in New York due to delays in receiving his U.S. work visa via Canada Post. Michael, who has spent over $4,000 on accommodation and necessities, expressed his concerns, saying, “I could lose my job, and with it, my social support system in the U.S.”
Medical Emergencies in Limbo
In Belleville, Ontario, 71-year-old Sharn Harrington-Hurst is awaiting her birth certificate to secure a health card required for brain aneurysm surgery. Unable to afford alternative courier services, she shared, “I’m under immense stress, as my surgery and other treatments depend on this.”
Charities Face Financial Challenges
The strike has also hit charities like NB Lung, a provincial lung health organization. The charity’s president, Melanie Langille, said donor contributions, mostly mailed by seniors, are now on hold, potentially impacting their patient support programs.
Government and Union Respond
Canada Post has delayed mailing over 85,000 passports due to the labour dispute. While some cheques for government benefits are still being delivered, other critical payments like provincial assistance are now only available for pickup.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers defended their strike, citing demands for better wages and working conditions. Negotiations with a federally appointed mediator are ongoing, with Canada Post stating their commitment to resolving the dispute at the bargaining table.
