Dhaka Suspends Consular Services in Agartala Amid Diplomatic Tensions
Dhaka has halted its consular services in Agartala, Tripura, signaling heightened tensions in India-Bangladesh relations. The suspension comes amid ongoing disagreements between the two neighbors over a range of issues.
Bangladesh’s acting foreign secretary, Reaz Hamidullah, summoned the Indian High Commissioner to discuss the development, according to the state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS). The precise reasons for the suspension remain unclear, but sources suggest it may be linked to recent bilateral disputes.
Reacting to the move, the Indian envoy emphasized the importance of maintaining a broader perspective in bilateral ties. “Our relationship cannot be reduced to a single issue. We share a deep historical and cultural connection that transcends any temporary challenges,” the envoy remarked.
The suspension of consular services in Agartala is expected to impact cross-border travel and visa processing, particularly for residents of Tripura who frequently rely on these services. Observers view the development as a potential strain on the otherwise strong ties between the two nations, which have historically collaborated on trade, security, and cultural exchanges.
Efforts to resolve the issue diplomatically are anticipated, with both sides emphasizing the need to preserve the broader framework of their partnership.
