Tensions Escalate in Varanasi College Over Friday Prayers at Campus Mosque; 7 Students Detained

Varanasi, December 5, 2024 – Tensions flared at a college in Varanasi on Friday as students clashed over prayers at a mosque located on the campus. A group of students chanting the Hanuman Chalisa staged a protest against the Friday prayers, leading to a standoff that required police intervention.

The unrest follows last month’s violence in Sambhal over the survey of a centuries-old mosque, which has reignited debates about places of worship. The mosque at the Varanasi college, long a point of contention, became a flashpoint again as students from opposing sides confronted each other.

Police briefly detained seven students to restore order. Authorities are investigating the incident and monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.

The college administration has appealed for calm and urged students to focus on their academics rather than engaging in religious disputes. However, the atmosphere remains tense, reflecting broader communal tensions in the region.

Local leaders have called for dialogue and mutual respect to resolve the issue peacefully. Further developments are awaited as the investigation continues.
