Supreme Court to Hear Pleas Challenging Places of Worship Act Next Week

New Delhi – The Supreme Court of India has constituted a special bench to hear multiple petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Places of Worship Act, 1991. The hearing is scheduled for next week.

The Act, which mandates the maintenance of the religious character of any place of worship as it existed on August 15, 1947, has been under scrutiny. Petitioners argue that it bars judicial remedies in disputes related to places of worship and contravenes the fundamental right to seek justice. They also contend that the Act violates the principle of secularism enshrined in the Constitution.

This development comes amidst growing public and political debate surrounding the historical and religious significance of various sites across the country.

Legal experts and constitutional scholars are expected to weigh in during the hearings, which could have far-reaching implications for India’s socio-religious fabric. The outcome of the case could also redefine the judiciary’s role in adjudicating sensitive matters of faith and history.
