India’s foreign tourist arrivals, already struggling to recover post-pandemic, have taken another blow as the ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh disrupts travel from its largest source market. Bangladeshi nationals, who form a significant share of India’s inbound tourism, are now traveling less due to escalating unrest in their home country.
Bangladesh has been a key contributor to India’s tourism economy, with visitors coming in primarily for medical treatment, shopping, and leisure. Cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Chennai have long been preferred destinations for Bangladeshi nationals seeking advanced healthcare facilities and retail opportunities. However, with political uncertainty and unrest gripping the neighboring nation, cross-border travel has slowed significantly.
Tour operators and hospitality businesses in India are reporting cancellations and a sharp decline in bookings from Bangladeshi travelers. “Bangladesh is a critical market for us, especially in the medical tourism sector. The current situation is a significant setback,” said a spokesperson for a leading medical tourism agency.
India’s tourism industry has been inching toward recovery after the pandemic-induced slump, with government campaigns promoting the country as a safe and vibrant destination. However, the dependency on neighboring countries like Bangladesh has exposed vulnerabilities in the sector’s growth trajectory.
Experts warn that prolonged political instability in Bangladesh could further delay India’s tourism revival. “While international travel is picking up globally, regional issues like these can cause localized disruptions, impacting revenue streams for states dependent on cross-border tourism,” said a tourism analyst.
The situation underscores the need for India’s tourism sector to diversify its inbound market and reduce over-reliance on a single country for foreign arrivals.
