Kerala Health Minister Monitors HMPV Outbreak in China, Urges Caution
Thiruvananthapuram – Kerala Health Minister Veena George has assured the public that the state is closely monitoring the situation in China following reports of a Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak. While emphasizing there is no reason for panic, she advised precautionary measures for vulnerable groups.
“We are carefully observing developments regarding the HMPV outbreak in China,” said George in a press briefing. “At present, there is no immediate threat to Kerala, but we remain vigilant.”
HMPV, a respiratory virus that primarily affects children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems, has raised concerns globally due to its potential impact on public health.
The minister advised pregnant women, people with serious health conditions, and those in crowded places to consider wearing masks as a precaution. “Early preparedness is key,” she said, highlighting the importance of hygiene and avoiding unnecessary exposure.
Health authorities in Kerala are on alert, with hospitals instructed to strengthen surveillance for respiratory illnesses. Public awareness campaigns are also being planned to educate citizens about the virus and its symptoms.
