Arvind Kejriwal Calls for Inclusion of Delhi Jats in Central OBC List, BJP Raises Concerns Over Timing
New Delhi, January 9, 2025 – Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged the Central Government to include Delhi’s Jat community in the Central Other Backward Classes (OBC) list, a move aimed at providing the community access to reserved quotas in education and employment.
Kejriwal emphasized that the inclusion would address long-standing demands of the Jat community in Delhi, stating that it is an issue of social justice and equality. “The Jat community has contributed significantly to the development of Delhi and deserves its rightful place in the OBC category,” he said during a press briefing.
However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has questioned the timing of the demand, calling it a politically motivated move ahead of upcoming elections. BJP leaders have accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of using the Jat community’s grievances to secure electoral gains.
“This sudden demand raises questions about the intent. Why now? The AAP government has had ample time to address this issue but chose to do so only when elections are near,” a BJP spokesperson said.
The inclusion of Delhi Jats in the Central OBC list requires approval from the Union Government, making it a contentious issue likely to spark further political debates. Meanwhile, members of the Jat community have welcomed Kejriwal’s demand, urging swift action from the Centre.
As the issue gains momentum, both AAP and BJP are expected to escalate their rhetoric, making the Jat inclusion debate a focal point in Delhi’s political landscape.
