India to Unveil Indigenous AI Models in 10 Months, Says IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

New Delhi – In a major boost to India’s artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that six Indian entities have made significant progress in developing foundation AI models. These models are expected to be released within the next ten months, marking a significant step toward India’s self-reliance in AI technology.

Speaking at an industry event, Vaishnaw emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering innovation in AI and reducing dependency on foreign technologies. “Six Indian entities have already shown great promise. In the coming ten months, we will see indigenous foundation models being released,” he stated.

While the minister did not disclose the names of the companies, sources suggest that major tech firms, research institutions, and startups are working on these AI models. The move aligns with the government’s vision of building an independent AI ecosystem that supports digital transformation, governance, and various industries.

With AI playing a crucial role in sectors like healthcare, finance, and automation, India’s push toward developing its own foundation models is expected to enhance national security, data privacy, and technological advancement.
