New Delhi – The Congress party has taken a swipe at the Modi government after The Washington Post debunked claims that USAID had funded news outlet The Wire. Calling the controversy a “matter between two friends,” Congress leaders ridiculed the BJP for allegedly misleading the public.
The controversy erupted after reports surfaced suggesting that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) had financially supported The Wire, a claim that The Washington Post has now refuted. The newspaper clarified that there is no evidence linking USAID funding to the Indian media outlet.
Congress leaders wasted no time in mocking the government, accusing it of using false narratives to target independent journalism. Party spokespersons alleged that the BJP had attempted to create a controversy for political gain but was now facing embarrassment on the global stage.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders have remained largely silent on the issue, while opposition parties continue to demand accountability over the government’s handling of the situation.
