Nuuk, Greenland – Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Bourup Egede, has firmly rejected the idea of the island being part of the United States or Denmark, following a resurfaced proposal by former U.S. President Donald Trump to purchase the territory.

In a strong statement on social media, Egede wrote, “We do not want to be Americans, nor Danes.” He emphasized Greenland’s identity and its ongoing pursuit of greater autonomy.

Trump had previously expressed interest in buying Greenland in 2019, calling it a “strategic” asset. The idea was widely dismissed at the time, with Denmark and Greenland making it clear that the island was not for sale. However, the topic has resurfaced, prompting a fresh wave of criticism.

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has been gradually seeking more independence in recent years. Egede’s statement signals a firm stance on the matter, reaffirming Greenland’s commitment to self-determination.

While the U.S. has maintained a military presence in Greenland, particularly at Thule Air Base, the island’s government has made it clear that its future will not be decided by foreign powers.
