The Israeli military has acknowledged a “mistake” after the release of video footage showing Israeli forces firing on clearly marked ambulances in southern Gaza, killing 15 emergency workers on March 23. Among the victims were eight Palestine Red Crescent Society medics and a UN staff member.
Initially, the IDF claimed the ambulances were unmarked and suspected of carrying militants. However, video evidence from a paramedic’s phone contradicted this narrative, showing flashing emergency lights and official markings on the vehicles.
In light of the footage, the IDF revised its statement and launched an investigation, admitting that the earlier version was based solely on soldiers’ testimonies. One survivor reported being beaten while in Israeli custody following the attack.
The victims’ bodies were discovered a week later in shallow graves, sparking international outrage. The incident is now seen as one of the most severe attacks on humanitarian workers in Gaza in recent years.
