In a significant directive, the Supreme Court of India has asked the Election Commission to consider using Aadhaar numbers, Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC), and ration cards during the ongoing revision of the voter roll in Bihar.
The suggestion came as the court reviewed petitions raising concerns about discrepancies and exclusion in the electoral list. The bench emphasized the need for a transparent and inclusive revision process that ensures every eligible citizen is accounted for.
The use of multiple identification documents, including Aadhaar and ration cards, is aimed at addressing gaps in voter verification, particularly in rural and economically weaker sections where documentation may vary.
The Election Commission has been asked to examine the feasibility of integrating these identifiers in a manner that upholds the integrity of the election process while safeguarding privacy and consent.
The court’s observations also underline the urgency of preparing an accurate voter roll ahead of future state and national elections, especially in regions like Bihar, where past revisions have faced scrutiny.
