Residents of Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador, are being urged to evacuate immediately as a fast-moving wildfire has advanced to within just one kilometre of the community. Local authorities raised the alarm late Tuesday evening, stressing the seriousness of the threat and prioritizing public safety.
The wildfire, which intensified due to strong winds and dry conditions, doubled in size overnight and has now grown to cover a significant area. Emergency crews are on the ground attempting to contain the blaze, but officials admit the situation remains extremely volatile.
“We are doing everything we can to slow the fire’s progression,” said a spokesperson from Newfoundland and Labrador’s Forestry Department. “But given the proximity to homes and unpredictable wind patterns, evacuation is the safest option.”
Evacuation shelters have been set up in nearby towns to accommodate displaced residents. Local fire departments and emergency response teams have been working around the clock, and aerial water bombers have been deployed to tackle the blaze from above.
Residents were seen packing up belongings and leaving the area under a tense atmosphere, hoping the firefighting efforts can protect their homes from the approaching flames.
The province has issued a high alert for surrounding communities as well, with warnings that shifting winds could push the fire in new directions.
