Foreign Minister reveals discussion during visit to Moscow amid global energy concerns

August 16, 2025 — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar disclosed that the United States once urged India to stabilize global energy markets by purchasing Russian oil, a statement he made during his visit to Moscow for high-level talks.

Speaking at an event in the Russian capital, Jaishankar said, “There was a time when Americans, perplexed by the situation, told us to buy Russian oil to keep the market steady.” His remarks come at a time of heightened scrutiny over India’s energy ties with Russia, especially amid Western sanctions and shifting global trade dynamics.

The minister emphasized that India’s approach to energy security has always been driven by national interest and global stability, pointing out that such decisions were taken with full awareness of international expectations. He reiterated that India remains committed to diversifying its energy sources, while ensuring affordability for its citizens.

Jaishankar’s statement is likely to spark debate in diplomatic circles as it sheds light on behind-the-scenes conversations during a critical phase of global oil price volatility. The visit to Moscow comes ahead of the upcoming Trump-Putin summit in Alaska, where energy cooperation and sanctions are expected to dominate discussions.
