The Canadian government has confirmed that it spent approximately $125,000 to send Canadian soldiers to London for a 10-day ceremonial mission guarding Buckingham Palace.
The deployment, part of a long-standing tradition of military cooperation between Canada and the United Kingdom, saw members of the Canadian Armed Forces stationed outside the royal residence, participating in the Changing of the Guard and other ceremonial duties. Officials described the mission as an opportunity to showcase Canada’s historic ties to the British monarchy and its commitment to NATO allies.
According to defence officials, the cost covered travel, accommodation, logistics, and operational support for the soldiers during their stay in London. While the ceremonial role was largely symbolic, it was highlighted as an important exercise in fostering Canada’s international presence and strengthening diplomatic relations with the U.K.
The mission sparked debate at home, with some critics questioning whether such spending was necessary amid fiscal pressures and growing demands on the defence budget.
