Ottawa — Canada has formally welcomed NATO’s Eastern Sentry, a new initiative designed to reinforce collective defence and deter threats along the Alliance’s Eastern Flank. The move comes amid heightened global security concerns and underscores Canada’s role as a key contributor to transatlantic stability.
Officials emphasized that Eastern Sentry will provide additional military support and enhance NATO’s forward presence in regions most exposed to Russian aggression. Canada views the deployment as a critical step in strengthening deterrence and ensuring allies can respond swiftly to any escalation.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Canada has contributed more than $22 billion in financial, military, and humanitarian aid. In addition, Ottawa has sanctioned nearly 4,000 individuals and entities linked to Russia, demonstrating its commitment to isolating Moscow and upholding international law.
“Canada stands firmly with its allies. Eastern Sentry is not only about defence—it is about unity and the message that NATO will defend every inch of its territory,” government officials said in a statement.
Analysts note that Canada’s strong support for NATO aligns with its broader foreign policy of defending democratic values and ensuring long-term stability in Europe. As Eastern Sentry takes shape, Canada is expected to continue playing a leading role in coordinating efforts to counter Russia’s influence while maintaining support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence.
