Kyiv – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed confidence in India’s support for Ukraine, saying he believes New Delhi is “mostly with us” as his country continues to rally global backing in its war against Russia.
Speaking to reporters, Zelenskyy acknowledged that energy concerns had previously complicated relations with India but insisted those issues could be resolved. “I think India is mostly with us. We had this question with energy but I think President Trump can manage it,” he said, referring to former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has positioned himself as a possible mediator in global energy politics.
Zelenskyy also called on European nations to strengthen their engagement with India, highlighting the country’s growing influence in global affairs. “Europeans should build a closer relationship with India,” he said, stressing that cooperation with New Delhi will be vital in shaping a broader coalition in support of Ukraine.
India has so far walked a careful line in the conflict, maintaining ties with both the West and Russia. While New Delhi has repeatedly called for peace and dialogue, it has also increased energy imports from Moscow, citing the need to safeguard its economic interests.
Analysts say Zelenskyy’s remarks reflect Kyiv’s strategy of keeping India engaged while appealing to its role as a democratic power with growing clout in international diplomacy. By framing India as “mostly with us,” Zelenskyy appeared to signal optimism that New Delhi could lean further toward Ukraine and its Western allies over time.
The Ukrainian leader’s comments come as he intensifies outreach to non-Western nations ahead of upcoming global summits, where support for Ukraine’s peace plan and sanctions against Russia are expected to dominate discussions. For Kyiv, India’s positioning remains crucial — not only for its global standing but also for ensuring that Russia does not fully consolidate its influence in Asia.
