Jerusalem – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sharply criticized Canada’s decision to formally recognize the State of Palestine, describing the move as “disgraceful” and a betrayal of democratic values.
Speaking at a press briefing in Jerusalem, Netanyahu accused Ottawa of undermining peace efforts by rewarding what he called “terrorist-backed leadership.” “This decision is not about peace — it is about appeasement. It encourages extremism and sends the wrong message to those who continue to attack Israel,” he said.
Canada’s recognition of Palestinian statehood earlier this week was hailed by Palestinian leaders as a historic breakthrough, but it has drawn condemnation from Israel and sparked debate among Canada’s allies. Ottawa framed the move as a necessary step toward a two-state solution, insisting it would not compromise Israel’s right to security.
Netanyahu, however, rejected that reasoning outright. “Recognizing a Palestinian state at this moment, while Hamas still holds hostages and rockets continue to rain down, is a disgraceful act,” he said. “It tells terrorists everywhere that violence will be rewarded.”
Israel’s foreign ministry has summoned the Canadian ambassador for formal protest and is reportedly weighing further diplomatic measures. Meanwhile, Palestinian officials celebrated Canada’s stance as a victory for justice and legitimacy, calling it a turning point in international recognition of their cause.
The clash over Canada’s decision adds fresh strain to Israel’s ties with Western nations, some of whom are increasingly critical of its military campaign in Gaza. Analysts say Netanyahu’s fiery remarks are aimed at both defending Israel’s position abroad and rallying domestic support amid mounting international pressure.
