India’s new High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, has expressed frustration over the heightened security measures around him, saying he “should not be under protection in a country like this.” His remarks come as India and Canada attempt to rebuild diplomatic ties following months of tension over allegations linking Indian diplomats to criminal activities in Canada.
Speaking to reporters, Patnaik dismissed claims made by both the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that suggested Indian officials were involved in homicides and extortion cases connected to Canada’s Sikh separatist movement. He called those allegations “baseless” and said they had caused unnecessary strain between the two countries.
“The focus now is on restoring normal relations and addressing the entire security situation, which includes the Sikh separatist issue,” Patnaik stated. He emphasized that discussions between Indian and Canadian officials have shifted toward cooperation rather than confrontation, with both sides recognizing the need for better communication on security concerns.
Diplomatic tensions between the two nations escalated sharply last year after Trudeau accused Indian agents of involvement in the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia. India rejected the claim as “absurd and motivated,” leading to reciprocal expulsions of diplomats and a cooling of bilateral ties.
However, recent meetings between senior officials have signaled cautious progress. Sources say the focus is now on rebuilding trust through regular dialogue on counterterrorism and community safety.
