India and the United States have begun work on a draft framework for a potential trade agreement, signaling progress in long-standing discussions aimed at strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that early-stage drafting has started but made it clear that New Delhi will not finalize any deal under pressure. “India will never negotiate with a gun to its head,” Goyal said, stressing that talks must be based on mutual respect and fairness.

Sources familiar with the discussions said the draft focuses on resolving tariff disputes, improving market access, and aligning trade policies to support both economies. U.S. officials are reportedly keen on addressing digital trade and intellectual property concerns, while India seeks better terms for its exports and technology collaborations.

The move comes amid renewed efforts by both sides to deepen strategic and economic ties following several rounds of bilateral meetings this year. While officials remain optimistic, Goyal reiterated that India’s national interest will remain the top priority throughout the negotiation process.
