In a surprise diplomatic turn, Canada has withdrawn its controversial tariff-related advertisement following U.S. President Donald Trump’s abrupt decision to cancel trade negotiations.
According to senior government officials, the ad—intended to highlight Canada’s stance on fair trade—was perceived in Washington as a direct challenge to U.S. trade policy. The decision to pull it came after Trump called off talks, citing what he described as “unacceptable political messaging” from Ottawa.
Sources in the Prime Minister’s Office said the government acted swiftly to avoid further escalation, emphasizing that Canada remains committed to maintaining open channels of communication with the U.S. “We believe in constructive dialogue and will continue to seek ways to strengthen our trade relationship,” an official statement said.
The suspension of talks marks another strain in the ongoing efforts to negotiate a new bilateral framework following earlier disagreements over auto tariffs and agricultural exports. Experts say both sides could return to the table soon, but only after the political fallout subsides.
Despite the setback, Canadian officials remain optimistic that trade discussions can resume before the upcoming APEC summit, where both leaders are expected to attend.
