Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Prince Edward Island Premier Rob Lantz in Ottawa today to discuss a series of economic priorities aimed at strengthening Canada’s growth and supporting local communities.

The talks focused on creating more job opportunities for youth, addressing the national housing shortage, and boosting export potential for Prince Edward Island’s key industries — particularly seafood and agriculture.

During the meeting, both leaders emphasized the importance of equipping young Canadians with the skills needed for the modern economy. The discussion included expanding access to training and apprenticeship programs that align with growing sectors like clean energy, technology, and advanced manufacturing.

Housing also took center stage, with Carney reiterating the federal government’s commitment to speeding up home construction across the country through funding and partnerships with provincial governments. Premier Lantz shared updates on PEI’s efforts to build affordable housing and improve infrastructure in smaller communities.

Another key focus was expanding international markets for PEI’s seafood and agricultural exports. Carney and Lantz agreed on the need to diversify trade routes to reduce dependence on traditional markets and increase resilience for local producers.

In a joint statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said the meeting reflected the federal government’s “collaborative approach to strengthening regional economies” and reaffirmed its support for initiatives that help Canadians build a more secure and sustainable future.
