The Canadian government has confirmed that a Canadian activist was injured in an attack by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, an incident that has drawn renewed attention to violence in the region and prompted calls from Ottawa for accountability.
Global Affairs Canada said the individual, whose name has not been released for privacy reasons, was part of a group monitoring tensions near a Palestinian village when they were assaulted by settlers. Local reports indicate the activists were documenting land incursions when a confrontation broke out, leading to the Canadian being struck and requiring medical attention.
Ottawa described the attack as “deeply concerning” and said it is in contact with local authorities and the victim to provide consular support. The government also reiterated Canada’s long-standing position on settlement-related violence, noting that such incidents undermine regional stability and violate international law.
Human rights groups say violence by settlers has surged in recent months, particularly in areas where Palestinian communities face eviction threats or expanding settlement activity. International monitors have documented attacks ranging from property destruction to physical assaults, often carried out with little deterrence.
The Israeli police have reportedly opened an investigation into the incident, though rights organizations caution that accountability for settler violence remains rare. Palestinian officials condemned the assault, arguing that settler groups operate with increasing impunity and that foreign activists are being targeted alongside local residents.
The attack comes at a time of heightened tensions across the West Bank, where clashes, raids, and displacement have become more frequent. Diplomats say the safety of international volunteers is becoming a growing concern as the conflict expands beyond traditional hotspots.
Canada has urged all parties to exercise restraint and called on Israeli authorities to ensure the protection of civilians, including foreign nationals. Ottawa says it will continue to monitor the situation closely as the investigation progresses.
