Modi holds talks with TrumpModi holds talks with Trump

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on strengthening economic and strategic cooperation, as New Delhi and Washington continue negotiations aimed at sealing a comprehensive trade agreement. Officials said the conversation focused on expanding collaboration across key sectors that both sides see as central to long-term partnership.

During the call, Modi and Trump exchanged views on deepening cooperation in trade, critical and emerging technologies, energy, defence, and security. The leaders acknowledged recent progress made by negotiating teams and stressed the importance of maintaining momentum to address outstanding issues in the proposed trade deal. Sources familiar with the talks said both sides are looking for a balanced agreement that supports growth while safeguarding domestic priorities.

Trade has emerged as a major pillar of the India–U.S. relationship, with bilateral commerce steadily rising over the past decade. However, differences remain over tariffs, market access, and regulatory standards. The phone conversation is seen as an effort to provide political direction and resolve bottlenecks as negotiators work toward a mutually acceptable framework.

Beyond trade, the leaders discussed cooperation in critical technologies, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing. India has been pushing for greater technology transfers and joint development, while the U.S. views India as a key partner in building resilient supply chains.

Energy and defence cooperation also featured prominently. Officials said the leaders reviewed ongoing defence partnerships and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening interoperability and joint production initiatives. Energy discussions included conventional and clean energy collaboration, with both sides underlining the need for secure and diversified energy supply chains.

The conversation comes amid a broader effort by both countries to elevate their strategic partnership in the face of global economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions. Observers say the direct engagement between Modi and Trump signals intent to keep bilateral ties on a steady course, even as complex negotiations continue at the working level.

Further talks between senior officials are expected in the coming weeks as India and the United States attempt to translate political intent into concrete agreements.
