Canadian Weightlifter Maude Charron Wins Silver at Paris Olympics in Women’s 59kg
Canadian weightlifter Maude Charron, a 31-year-old Olympic champion, has claimed the silver medal in the women’s 59kg weightlifting event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Competing at the South Paris Arena, Charron faced a challenging journey to the podium, which included overcoming a knee injury and losing over 10 pounds to qualify for her new weight class.
Charron, who previously won gold in the now-defunct 64kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, expressed immense joy and satisfaction with her performance. Despite the shift to a lighter weight class, she was able to secure a silver medal with a total lift of 236 kilograms. China’s Luo Shifang won the gold medal with a lift of 241 kilograms, setting three new Olympic records in the process.
Reflecting on her experience, Charron emphasized that her primary goal was to fully embrace the Olympic atmosphere, something she felt was missing during the Tokyo Games due to the lack of spectators. She noted that the support of her team and the cheering fans made this Olympic experience much more fulfilling, despite the intense pressure and challenges she faced leading up to the event.
Charron celebrated her achievement with pride, acknowledging the hard work and dedication that went into her preparation. As she stood on the podium, surrounded by her fellow athletes and the supportive crowd, she felt a deep sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the opportunity to represent Canada on the world stage once again.
