Public health authorities in Ottawa are intensifying their vaccination campaign to curb the spread of the mpox virus, as early response to the program has been overwhelmingly positive. Over the weekend, a local health clinic in Centretown announced the availability of 36 vaccination slots for the virus, previously known as monkeypox. By Monday, all slots were fully booked, prompting the clinic to explore options for expanding the program.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by Ottawa’s public health department, which is also offering vaccinations at its Sexual Health Clinic on Clarence Street. Officials are urging those at risk to take advantage of the available vaccinations, especially in light of a dangerous new strain of the virus emerging in Africa.
Recent reports indicate that this new strain, known as clade 1b, has a much higher mortality rate, particularly among children. The strain has spread rapidly across several African countries, including Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and Burundi, largely due to the displacement of millions of people in conflict zones. Children under 15 years old are especially vulnerable, with three out of five cases affecting this age group.
While there have been five confirmed cases of mpox in Ottawa this year, health officials remain vigilant. They emphasize that even though these numbers do not represent a significant statistical increase, the situation is being closely monitored. The latest strain has not yet reached Canada, but the potential threat has prompted a proactive response.
Community response to the vaccination program has been swift and encouraging. Local health advocates believe this reflects a strong awareness and willingness among the public to take action in preventing the spread of the virus.
Vaccinations at the Centretown clinic are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, with efforts underway to secure additional vaccine doses to meet the rising demand. Public health officials continue to stress the importance of vaccination and urge residents to stay informed and take precautions, highlighting the interconnected nature of global and local health concerns.
