Family Outraged by New Brunswick Premier’s Comments Following Lawsuit Over ER Death

Fredericton, NB – The family of Darrell Mesheau, a 78-year-old man who died after a seven-hour wait in a Fredericton emergency room in 2022, has expressed deep disappointment with Premier Blaine Higgs’ recent comments regarding their ongoing lawsuit.

Mesheau’s family, who has filed a lawsuit against Horizon Health and two nurses involved in Mesheau’s care, was shocked by Premier Higgs’ remarks last weekend, where he criticized the family for naming individual nurses in the lawsuit. Higgs urged the family to reconsider, citing a coroner’s inquest that did not find negligence on the part of the nurses.

Ryan Mesheau, Darrell’s son, responded with a strongly worded statement, calling the Premier’s comments misleading and self-serving. He emphasized that the inquest did not absolve the nurses of potential negligence and criticized Higgs for what he perceived as an attempt to gain political points.

The family had previously reached out to Higgs with a letter following the inquest, requesting action on several recommendations to improve the healthcare system. They were disheartened by the Premier’s response, which they described as lacking substance and failing to address their concerns.

Despite the Premier’s criticism, the family remains resolute in their pursuit of justice, continuing with the lawsuit as it stands.

The case has sparked significant public attention, with many watching to see how the Premier will handle the ongoing controversy and calls for healthcare reform in New Brunswick.
