Trudeau made the announcement during a federal cabinet retreat in Halifax, highlighting that this measure is designed to level the playing field for Canadian workers and protect the growing domestic EV industry. The surtax is expected to double the price of Chinese-made vehicles, which will likely be passed on to Canadian consumers.
The Canadian government is also set to impose a 25% surtax on Chinese imports of steel and aluminum products, beginning October 15, 2024. This move is part of a broader strategy to safeguard critical industries in Canada from what Trudeau described as China’s intentional overcapacity and oversupply policies.
China has responded with strong opposition, arguing that the tariffs will harm Canadian consumers and disrupt trade relations between the two countries. Critics, including environmental groups, have expressed concerns that the tariffs will make EVs less affordable, potentially slowing the country’s transition to greener transportation options.
Trudeau defended the decision, emphasizing the need for fair competition and the protection of Canadian jobs, particularly in the burgeoning EV sector. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland echoed these sentiments, stating that the tariffs are necessary to prevent Canadian industries from being undermined by Chinese practices that disregard labour and environmental standards.
