Canada’s Veterans to Be Honoured at National Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa
November 11, 2024
Today, Canadian veterans, along with their families, senior politicians, and officials, will gather at the National War Memorial in Ottawa to commemorate Remembrance Day. This year’s ceremony carries significant weight, marking several key anniversaries: 80 years since D-Day, 10 years since the end of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan, 60 years of peacekeeping in Cyprus, and the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The Royal Canadian Legion has organized the event, which begins at 10:30 a.m. ET. At 11 a.m., the nation will pause for two minutes of silence to honour the men and women who lost their lives in military service.
Governor General Mary Simon is set to attend, alongside this year’s National Silver Cross Mother, Maureen Anderson, who will lay a wreath in memory of Canadian families who have lost a child in military service.
Following the ceremony, a special flypast of vintage military aircraft will take place at 11:30 a.m., paying tribute to the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 100th anniversary. Each aircraft is uniquely painted in honour of a veteran, symbolizing a century of sacrifice and dedication.
The event underscores the importance of remembering the contributions of Canadian armed forces members across various missions and wars, ensuring their legacy is preserved for future generations.
