Omar Abdullah: PM Modi Should Be Given ‘First Opportunity’ to Restore J&K’s Statehood
Srinagar, January 2:
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be given the “first opportunity” to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood rather than taking the matter to court.
While addressing a question regarding whether the elected government should approach courts for the restoration of statehood, Abdullah stated, “It is the responsibility of the central government to undo what was done in 2019. The prime minister and his government should take the lead in restoring statehood.”
Abdullah further clarified that while legal avenues remain an option, political leadership must prioritize addressing the aspirations of the people. “Going to the court is a recourse, but it should not be the primary route. The Centre must act in good faith to fulfill its promises,” he added.
The statement comes amidst growing demands for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, which was downgraded to a Union Territory following the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
Political experts see Abdullah’s remarks as a call for the central government to take immediate steps to address the concerns of the region and foster trust between New Delhi and the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Conclusion:
The restoration of statehood remains a contentious issue, and Abdullah’s comments underline the importance of dialogue and political action in resolving the matter.
