Waqf Protests Turn Violent in Murshidabad; 3 Killed, Court Orders Central Forces Deployment

Rising Tensions Prompt Court Intervention Amid Escalating Clash

Murshidabad, West Bengal – A wave of violence erupted in Murshidabad on Saturday as protests over Waqf property issues spiraled out of control, leaving three people dead and several others injured. The unrest, which began as a local dispute, quickly turned into a larger confrontation, drawing in various community groups.

Eyewitnesses reported incidents of arson, stone-pelting, and clashes between protestors and local police. In response to the deteriorating situation, the Calcutta High Court has ordered the immediate deployment of central paramilitary forces to restore law and order in the district.

The protests are reportedly linked to allegations of illegal land acquisition and mismanagement of Waqf properties, which have long been a point of contention in the region. Political leaders have called for peace and urged all sides to avoid violence.

Authorities have imposed Section 144 in several areas and internet services have been suspended to prevent the spread of misinformation. The state government has assured a thorough investigation into the matter and promised compensation to the families of the deceased.

Further developments are awaited as central forces begin to arrive in Murshidabad for ground assessment and control.
