Ottawa, August 8, 2025 — Canada’s economy shed 41,000 jobs in July, but the national unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.9%, according to the latest labour force data.
The losses were concentrated in full-time employment, with declines across sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and retail. These were partially offset by gains in part-time positions, keeping the unemployment rate steady despite the overall drop in job numbers.
Analysts say the flat rate indicates a slower pace of hiring alongside reduced labour force participation, as fewer Canadians actively sought work. Wage growth continued to climb, up 4.1% year-over-year, offering some relief to households facing high living costs.
Economists warn that if job losses persist, consumer confidence and spending could weaken, posing fresh challenges for economic growth in the coming months.
