Avionics and key components set for overhaul to boost reliability and cut disruptions
August 9, 2025 — Air India has announced plans to upgrade the avionics and other critical components of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet in an effort to improve operational reliability and reduce flight disruptions.
The airline said the initiative will focus on modernizing navigation systems, flight control units, and other onboard technologies that are crucial for performance and safety. According to officials, the move is aimed at addressing recurring technical issues that have, in some cases, led to delays and maintenance downtime.
The upgrades, to be carried out in phases, will also include replacing certain mechanical parts prone to wear and installing updated software to enhance fuel efficiency and flight monitoring. Air India expects the program to significantly reduce unscheduled maintenance events and improve the passenger experience.
The carrier operates dozens of Dreamliners on both domestic and long-haul international routes, making the aircraft a backbone of its fleet. The overhaul plan comes as the airline continues broader modernization efforts under its current expansion strategy.
