Certified professionals from other provinces will be able to work in Ontario within 10 days under the new framework

Toronto: In a major move aimed at boosting labour mobility, the Ontario government has announced that starting January 2026, certified professionals from other Canadian provinces will be allowed to work in Ontario within just 10 days of applying, under the new “As of Right” rules.

The policy is designed to make it easier for skilled workers in regulated professions—such as trades, health care, and engineering—to relocate and start working without facing lengthy certification delays. Officials say the measure will address critical labour shortages and help meet growing demand in key sectors.

According to the new guidelines, professionals with valid certification in another province or territory will not need to undergo additional testing or lengthy administrative hurdles before beginning work in Ontario. The government emphasized that this step aligns with national efforts to create a seamless, mobile workforce across Canada.

“This is about making Ontario the best place to work and do business while ensuring we attract top talent from across the country,” a senior official stated.

The move has been welcomed by many industry groups, who see it as a significant step in reducing barriers and improving economic efficiency. However, some have raised concerns about maintaining uniform quality and standards, especially in highly regulated fields like healthcare.

The provincial government has indicated that further details on implementation, including compliance measures, will be released later this year.
