Canadian Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s strong commitment to NATO and European security, announcing the renewal of Operation REASSURANCE, Canada’s largest and longest-running international military deployment.
“For over a decade, Canadian troops have been indispensable on NATO’s Eastern Flank,” the Prime Minister said, emphasizing the central role Canada has played in deterring Russian aggression and defending sovereignty in Europe. He noted that as tensions remain high following Russia’s actions in Ukraine, the continuation of this mission sends a clear signal of unity and resolve among NATO allies.
Operation REASSURANCE, first launched in 2014 in response to Russia’s annexation of Crimea, has seen Canada contribute thousands of troops over the years, along with naval and air assets. The mission involves Canadian soldiers leading NATO’s multinational battle group in Latvia, supporting joint training exercises, and bolstering the alliance’s readiness in the region.
The Prime Minister stressed that the renewal of the mission not only reinforces Canada’s reliability as a defense partner but also highlights its role as a global actor committed to peace and stability. “We will continue to deter Russian aggression and defend sovereignty in Europe and around the world,” he declared.
