Leh – Renowned education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has cautioned authorities that imprisoning him in connection with the ongoing unrest in Ladakh could inflame tensions and deepen the crisis.
Speaking to supporters amid growing protests over Ladakh’s demand for statehood and constitutional safeguards, Wangchuk said that any move to silence voices of dissent would only backfire. “If they jail me, it will not solve the problem — it will create more,” he said. His remarks drew loud applause from demonstrators who have been rallying for greater autonomy and protections for local land, culture, and resources.
The Ladakh region has witnessed escalating protests in recent weeks, with locals demanding implementation of Sixth Schedule rights to safeguard their tribal identity and environment.
