Hyderabad/Washington – A 24-year-old student from Hyderabad, who had recently moved to the United States to pursue his Master’s degree, was tragically shot dead during a robbery at a gas station where he worked part-time. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Indian community abroad and sparked renewed concerns over the safety of international students.

According to U.S. police reports, the victim, identified as Sai Teja Reddy, was working a late-night shift at a gas station in Ohio when two armed assailants entered the store and attempted to rob it. Witnesses said that Reddy complied with their demands, but one of the suspects opened fire before fleeing the scene. Emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Reddy had moved to the U.S. earlier this year to pursue a graduate program in computer science. Like many international students, he had taken up a part-time job to support his education and living expenses. Friends described him as hardworking, ambitious, and well-liked among his peers. “He had big dreams. He was always smiling and determined to make his family proud,” said a classmate.

The local police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and released CCTV footage from the gas station, appealing to the public for any information that could aid the investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the motive was robbery, and authorities believe the incident was not a targeted attack.

In Hyderabad, the news of Reddy’s death has devastated his family, who were preparing for his bright future. His father said, “We sent him to America with so many hopes. We can’t believe he’s gone like this.” Efforts are now underway to bring his body back to India, with assistance from the Indian consulate.

The incident has reignited conversations about the risks faced by international students who work night shifts in the U.S., often in vulnerable locations like convenience stores and gas stations. Community organizations have urged authorities to improve safety measures and provide better support for foreign students.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has contacted U.S. officials to ensure a thorough investigation and provide consular assistance to the family. “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and are working closely with local authorities to ensure justice is served,” said a ministry spokesperson.

For many young Indians pursuing their dreams abroad, Reddy’s death is a heartbreaking reminder of the unforeseen dangers they may encounter while trying to build a better future.
